A Grown-Up Summer in Angus: Shows, Games and Long Light Evenings
Here's the thing about summer in Angus: it doesn't shout. The light just stretches out longer and longer, the shows and games start filling the weekends, and suddenly there's more on than you can reasonably fit into one trip.
So let me do the useful bit for you. These are real summer events near Forfar in Angus, all within an easy run of the park, all worth planning a day or an evening around. And the best part, if you're staying with us: you get to enjoy every bit of it, then come home to the quiet. No campsite hum, no children's disco drifting over the hedge. Just you, the long light, and a peaceful evening.
Here's what I'd circle in the diary.
Highland games in the glens and on Deeside
If you've never stood at a Highland games, do it. The pipes, the heavy events, the dancing, the smell of the grass. It's one of those days that feels timeless.
The Glenisla Highland Games take place on Friday 21 August 2026 at The Haugh, Forter, right up in the Angus Glens. It's a proper glen setting, and the drive up alone is worth the petrol.
A little further afield, the Dunkeld and Birnam Highland Games have been running since 1864 (yes, really), and the 2026 games are on Saturday 29 August at the Games Park, Little Dunkeld, in Perthshire. There's something rather lovely about an event with that much history behind it.
Either makes a grand day out. Take a folding chair, take your time, and don't rush home.
The Perth Show
For a proper agricultural county show, head to Perth. The Perth Show is a two-day affair on Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August 2026, held on the South Inch in the middle of town.
Livestock, machinery, food, the lot. It's the kind of day where you go for an hour and stay for four. Well worth the run over.
Arbroath Music and Food Festival
Over on the coast, the Arbroath Music and Food Festival lands on the same weekend, Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August 2026, with the main event at Inchcape Park.
Music and food by the sea. Need I say more? If you fancy pairing it with a walk along the front and a fish supper (no driving home tired, no washing up, that's the beauty of it), you'll have yourself a fine day out.
Two events, one weekend, both close by. You'll have to choose. No wrong answers.
Glamis Castle after dark
And this one's for the grown-ups. Glamis Castle runs a summer programme of adult-friendly evenings, and there are two I'd especially flag.
There's a jazz and blues evening on Friday 24 July 2026, and a folk night on Saturday 1 August 2026. Music in the grounds of a proper castle on a long summer evening is about as good as it gets.
Glamis is one of those places practically on the doorstep, so you can drift back afterwards while the light's still holding.
Come home to the quiet
